Tilcara - Purmamarca - Iruya - Humahuaca, Argentina

15-18/04/11
From Salta we move north to Tilcara, a small town in the Quebrada de Humahuaca. It's about as big as Cavaso del Tomba and has a touristy feel to it. Same as Purmamarca which we visit the next day. This even smaller town is famous for its Cerro de siete colores - a hill with 7 different coloured layers of rock. There's a big crafts market all around the central square.
In Tilcara we stay at the El Andaluz hostel (25 pesos), same owner as the one in Salta, unfortunately very disappointing - dirty and falling apart.
We visit Pucara, an pre inca settlement in Tilcara, recreated by archaeologists.
The last day in Tilcara we happen to find a couple from Buenos Aires whom we had met in Cafayate during our tour to the Quebrada de las Conchas. They invite us to go to Iruya with them the next day.
Iruya is a an extremely pretty town in the middle of the mountains - about 50km off the main road from Humahuaca to La Quiaca. The landscape is simply awesome and we reach an altitude of 4000m for the first time!
That same night we slept in Humahuaca at an old lady's house, our room had a life-size lama and indigenous woman! fake of course :)

Next stop...Bolivia!!!
