Itacaré, Brazil

(30/01-05/02) I was a bit unsure about what to expect but my first impression was positive - small typical Brazilian town with the best beaches I have ever seen. The downside was the fact it was so touristy. Everything revolves around one main street in the barrio of Pituba, full of restaurants, bars and pousadas, oh and lots of tourist agencies as well, who try to sell you their tours.
In just 10 mins by foot you reach the first beach Praia Do Resende, one of my favourites. All the beaches in Itacaré are great for surfing. The most beautiful is the isolated Praia Prainha which you can only reach by trekking across the forst (about 40 mins). It's so vast and empty- I'll post a pic! We went there with Nikhil(a Brazilian friend we met in Italy) and his girlfriend - it was so great seeing them!
The first two nights we stayed at the Che Lagarto hostel, it had just opened so it seemed that everyone could pretty much do what they wanted - including free Caipirinhas at the bar :) We also had a bbq on the huge terrace upstairs. However it was too expensive and we moved to the Pico Das Praias Pousada were we camped for 4 nights - hosted by this old lady who just said NO to anything we asked her! Not very helpful!

The last day we were lead into buying a one day tour to the Maraú Peninsula - supposedly it can only be reached with 4x4 jeeps so we gave up the idea of renting a car. We snorkelled at the the Praia Taipú de Fora but it wasn't that great - most of the coral was dead, we probably should have gone after the reef but didn't have proper shoes and only 1 mask between the two.
Our portuguese is still lacking - but Nikhil gave us some great lessons while on the beach and I've also bought a phrase book which is incredibly helpful. The hardest part of the language is the pronunciation.
7 days is enough here....We are heading off to Porto Seguro..
